  • 15. August 2002. - 11. October 2002.
Profane Ikons

Onarckep I was born in 1947 in Esztergom, Hungary; graduated from the Benedictine Grammar School of Pannonhalma, then received my diploma in Drawing at the Teacher's College of Eger. My graduate studies were conducted at the Academy of Fine Arts working with Masters Laszlo Patay and Tibor Brada. In 1973 I received my MFA degree with distinction.

Since 1974, I have been living and working in Budapest as a graphic artist, mounting major exhibitions on a regular basis both at home and abroad, winning distinctions and august prizes along the way. Some of my Hungarian one-man-shows were, among others, in Esztergom, Pecs and Budapest where I immediately won the 20th District Graphic Prize.

My foreign successes featured, to mention only a few, in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Algires, Japan and several US cities. (See List of Exhibitions). I am member of the National Association of Hungarian Creative Artists and of the Association of Graphic Artists.

In addition to my graphics, I have been doing enamels for almost twenty years working at the Enamel Workshop of Kecskemet where in 1995 I won the annual Grand Prize and in 1997 The Society of Hungarian Enamel Artists elected me as their first president.

My large-size enamels decorate several main buildings both inside and outside, they are exhibited on public squares at home as well as abroad. Some of my major standing works in Budapest are at the Paneuropa School, BRFK (Police Department of Budapest); Dobogoko: Holiday Hotel; Harkany: Church Garden; Nagyvarad and Toti (Romania): Castle-Church and Roman Catholic Church.

In 1996, for instance, I was commissioned and subsequently displayed as feature artist. My enamel statue "The Seven Arrows of the Hungarians" celebrating Hungary's Millcentenary, included seven 12 meter-long arrows, 56 enamel panels covering nearly 96 square-meters of space.

My works, graphics and enamels alike, can be found in a variety of Hungarian and foreigh private and public collections. - By and large I have two kinds of enamels:
1. sarcastic figurative works developing from the tangle of colored bunches of paint;
2. illustrative enamel graphics using the technique of melting of copper sheet and glass colored with oxides of metals which have Biblical themes and are mostly engaged in describing human relations and/or analyzing different ethical problems.

During all these creative years I also kept teaching in various capacity: between 1982-1995 I was senior lecturer of drawing, and instructor of figure-drawing, graphics and enamel art at the Janus Pannonius University of Pecs.

Moreover, since 1974 I have been heading the Imre Gaal Youth & Children's Fine Arts Studio in Budapest.

My publications comprise of numerous Hungarian and foreign articles and critical studies on visual education and multifarous art artivities.

My favorite Hungarian artist is Marta M. Nemeth, my lovely wife, mother of our three-year-old son, Fulop, already a budding artist.
