The "People & Potteries" project and exhibition attempts to focus on the human side of ceramics production across Europe. Working conditions, skills, technical changes, products, personalities and national heroes are explored in this exhibition at the Porcelain Museum Herend which runs until 1st June.
This cross-European museums partnership is the only one of its kind in the world, six institutions from European ceramics regions have collaborated on the project funded by the European Union through its "Culture 2000" Community Programme.
Dr. Wilhelm Siemen director of Porzellanikon Selb, Dr. Attila Simon managing director of the Herend Porcelain Manufactory Ltd. and Dr. Árpád Kovács president of the State Audit Office of Hungary as patron of the exhibition said few words at the official opening, accompanied by the haunting flute sounds of Szabolcs Kövi.
The idea behind this exhibition is to ensure that generations will be educated about the history of the pottery industry in regions where the heritage was at its richest. It looks into the working and social lives of pottery workers across Europe using historic images and video footage of former pottery workers talking about factory life.
